One of the challenges of living in a rental property is making it feel like your own home. A tenants lease may restrict them from making alterations, including decorating, to the property without prior approval from the landlord/agent. Here are a few suggestions to help you personalise your rental property without altering it.

If you are unsure if you are permitted to carry out these modifications, please contact your landlord/agent first.

Add Rugs

When you tour a new house or apartment, one of the first things you notice is the flooring. Investing in unique rugs will give your space instant colour and texture as well as personal style.

Hang curtains

One of the easiest ways to make an empty room feel cosy is by adding curtains. These can also add colour and personality to a room. If you don’t like to commit to specific colours or if you are on a tight budget, you can always hang flat, twin-sized sheets or drop cloths with curtain clips.

All about mirrors

Mirrors are a great way to enhance a space, and they also trick the eye into thinking a space is bigger than it really is, which can be beneficial in a small apartment.

Frame the walls

Instead of adding wallpaper, consider a framing wall. You can even create a series of three or six to fill up a wall, creating a big impact.

Change the Hardware

While you may be renting and unable to make any permanent changes to your new place, don’t let that restrict you from doing some reversible changes. Changing the hardware in kitchens and bathrooms can completely transform a space. It can take you from traditional to modern or modern to rustic, whichever suits you best.

If hardware is provided with the property, make sure it is boxed up and stored safely for the duration of the let. It can simply be restored at the end of your tenancy.
