Good news for Edinburgh student landlords

A council tax exemption for student landlords has been announced, following the passing of a second Coronavirus Bill in the Scottish Parliament.
The Bill made its way through the Parliament this week, and was passed late on Wednesday evening. A number of alarming private rental sector amendments had been proposed by some Green and Labour MSPs, but these were defeated. The Bill does however contain a key change for landlords of student properties.

Council tax exemption for student landlords

MSPs approved a change which exempts properties previously occupied by students from council tax for the duration of the legislation being in force. This exemption applies to properties which became unoccupied on or after 17 March 2020. The exemption will end when the legislation expires on 30 September 2020 although there is provision for the legislation to be extended beyond this date.

This is great news for Edinburgh’s student landlords, who were some of the first to be negatively impacted by COVID-19.
